SANTA FE ART INSTITUTE “TRUTH & RECONCILIATION” ARTIST RESIDENCY
Date:  September - November 2018
Santa Fe Art Institute, Santa Fe, NM
Description:
“My residency time explored creating a series of art that investigates the truth of how Abraham Maslow, a founder of Humanistic Psychology, developed his Hierarchy of Needs model and much of his theory of Selfactualization from Niitsitapi (the Blackfoot People) philosophy and symbology without ever giving credit to them. Based upon the research of Sydney Stone Browns book, "Native Self Actualization: Transformaion Beyond Greed". The book transcribes how Abraham Maslow took from the Siksika (Blackfoot) people philosophies and created his hiearchy of needs model for self actualization. The book echoes the elders words "He got it Wrong, He didnt tell it they way we wanted it to be told. He didnt credit the Elders."

This painting incorporates a portrait of Niitsitapi elder Bear Bull along with symbols based on Niitsitapi tipi designs. The inverted tipi emerging from Bear Bull is a correction of Maslow’s pyramid that he created to demonstrate his Hierarchy of Needs leading to Self-actualization. The inverted tipi design more accurately represents ancient Niitsitapi philosophy, which places individual awareness at the base and the health and happiness of community at the highest level.

The circular patterns symbolize the people and community, the zigzag designs represent the surrounding environment, lightning and mountains, and the designs around the inverted tipi represent Niitsitapi constellations stories and star knowledge.”
